Hypoglycemia Contract Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, can affect small breeds of puppies and all owners must be on the lookout for it. It is not a disease or a hereditary issue. It is caused by the puppy’s body uses up all the available sugar in its bloodstream for energy and has no reserve to draw and as that happens the puppy loses it’s appetite, making the problem worse. They do not eat to rebuild the energy they need. It can be brought on by lost of appetites with all the excitement of a new home and/or the stress of changing their environment. They suddenly become weak, listless, depressed, unaware of its surroundings, and even unable to stand or walk. Advanced stages include seizures before lapsing into a coma, which can be followed by death! It is important to get nourishment into your puppy immediately. Nutri-cal is made specifically for this purpose. It is a fast acting high calorie supplement. Put it on your finger and rub it on the roof of its mouth. If necessary, pry the pups mouth open. Regardless of how you do it, make the puppy take the Nutr-cal. THEIR LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT. Please keep a tube of Nutr-ical on hand at all times. (honey or Karo syrup can also be used)
Remember that puppies eat very small amounts, yet they exert large amounts of energy. Make sure your puppy has access to dry food at all times. If a puppy is in bed with you it cannot eat to keep it’s blood sugar level up. Puppy’s need their own bed. Your puppy has been eating Diamond Pet Food, for small breed puppy (blue label), which we have supplied a sample for you. I purchase it from Tracker Supply, it can be found at other feed stores. DO NOT CHANGE THE FOOD FOR THE FIRST FEW WEEKS. If you wish to change the food later do so gradually, after the puppy has adjusted to its new home and life.
If you suspect your puppy has become hypoglycemic, give it Nutr-ical and seek medical attention immediately. Giving the Nutr- ical can save a puppy even on the trip to the Vet’s office. With a little extra care, your new puppy will do just fine.
I ___________________________have read and understand what to do in the case that my puppy develops hypoglycemia. I agree to provide veterinary care for my puppy if it shows any symptoms of hypoglycemia. I will not hold Joy’s Homegrown Chihuahuas responsible in the case that my puppy has a hypoglycemic episode.
